Proposal

Summary

The save and load features can be accessed via the ingame menu.

The save dialog has to provide a possibility to enter a name for the save game and should display other saved games, so that they can be selected and overwritten.

Similarly to the save dialog, the load dialog displays all saved games. The user can select one and load it via a click on a confirm button.

Implementation related note

There are three types of savegames: autosave (automatic saves every n minutes), quicksave (saved by hotkey) and regular saves (saved via the save dialog in ingame menu). Everyone of those has it's own directory, which makes them easy to distinguish. In the load dialog, all of them are displayed.

Open Questions

Question Open question:
Should it be possible to load a game via doubleclick on an item of the savegame list?

totycro

Answer Suggestion:
Why not

LinuxDonald

Answer Suggestion:
As used in most modern games you should have the possibility to activate an item in a list via doubleclick and additionally via a GUI button, because this is a matter of accessbility for people who are not able to doubleclick due to a physical handicap.

totycro

Answer Suggestion:
Yes

LinuxDonald

Question Open question:
How can the user quicksave?

totycro

Answer Suggestion:
By using an empty name in the save dialog or via a shortcut (possibly F5, because a number of other games use this key.

Question Open question:
What should happen after the game is saved? Continue the game or display the ingame menu? What should happen when the user presses cancel on the save dialog?

totycro

Answer Suggestion:
When the game is save the user should still be in the save game menu having the option to decide wether to return to game or to main menu. If the save dialog is canceld the same should happen. Most likely via additional buttons within the menu.

Question Open question:
Can the user delete a savegame? If yes, how?

totycro

Answer Suggestion:
Yes, this should be possible. I think an additional button within the menu might be the easiest and savest way. The user select the save game, press on the button and a popup window will ask him/her to confirm the action.

Question Open question:
Should the map name and or or the time be included in the savegame-name, that is automatically proposed? (like this: MyMap, 13:37)

totycro

Answer Suggestion:
Nope. The user can choose an individual name for each save game excluding "quicksave" and "autosave". This name will be displayed in the save game list and all other details (date and time, map and scenario name, maybe name of user profile, and a thumnailed screenshot) are featured in an info box next to the save game list.
